Fuel brands qualify people, not just properties. Before you operate a franchised or branded fuel station in Florida, the brand or its distributor will want to know whether you can run the site to their standard.
Requirements vary by brand and by program, so treat this as the shape of the process and confirm specifics with the brand or supplier for your deal.
Operator qualification
Expect a review of financial capacity, credit, operating experience in retail or fuel, and your proposed management structure. Brands want to know who is actually going to be at the store and whether that person has run one before.
Some programs require completion of brand training for you or a designated manager before you can open under the brand. Ask about training timing early, because it can affect your closing and opening schedule.
Site, image, and equipment standards
The brand will set requirements for canopy and signage, dispenser type and appearance, lighting, forecourt condition, restroom and store standards, and sometimes point of sale and payment systems. If the site needs image work, you will typically commit to completing it on a schedule.
Territory also matters. A brand will assess how a new branded site affects existing branded locations nearby, which can influence whether approval is granted at all.
Ongoing operating obligations
Once operating, obligations usually include purchasing fuel from the designated supplier, meeting minimum volume where required, maintaining insurance at specified levels, complying with image and cleanliness standards, participating in required payment and loyalty programs, and allowing brand inspections.
Separately, Florida regulatory duties continue regardless of brand: tank registration and compliance, fuel tax registration, dispenser accuracy, and retail licensing. We help operators evaluate those brand commitments through fuel supply agreement advisory before they sign.
