What the System Has To Cover
Interior: register and cash handling area with a clear face and hand view, cold vault and high-shrink aisles, back office and safe, storage and rear exit. Exterior: every dispenser island with plate-legible coverage of approaches, the entrance and exits, air and vacuum, car wash bays, the tank fill area, and the trash enclosure.
Coverage quality matters more than camera count. A dozen cameras that produce unusable footage at night are worse than six well-placed ones with proper low-light performance, because they create the illusion of protection.
Specifying the Equipment
Look for IP cameras at sufficient resolution for plate and face identification at the required distance, true low-light or infrared capability, vandal-resistant housings outdoors, and a recorder with enough storage for a retention period that satisfies your insurer and any franchise or supplier requirement — commonly thirty days or more.
Integrate with the POS so transactions overlay on register video, which is how you catch sweethearting, void abuse, and refund fraud. Add remote viewing on mobile, motion and line-crossing alerts, and a UPS so the system survives power interruptions.
Policy, Compliance, and Cost
Post required signage, follow state law on audio recording, restrict footage access to named managers, and document a retention and export procedure so evidence is usable. Insurers and some brand programs specify minimum standards — confirm yours before purchasing.
