Buyers use the word franchise loosely in fuel retail, and it causes real confusion. There are two separate agreements involved, and you can have one without the other.
The fuel side is a branded supply relationship. The store side may be a c-store or foodservice franchise. Understanding the difference tells you what you are actually signing up for in Florida.
Branded fuel supply versus store franchising
A branded fuel agreement lets you sell a major brand's fuel and use its image, in exchange for a purchase commitment, image standards, and often an image loan. That relationship is generally with a refiner or with a distributor that holds the supply rights for your area.
A convenience store or quick-service food franchise is a different contract entirely, covering store branding, systems, product standards, royalties, and territory. Plenty of Florida stations run a major fuel brand with an independently branded store, or an unbranded pump with a franchised food offer.
What a brand looks for in an operator
Expect qualification on financial capacity, operating experience, site standards, and willingness to complete image work on a schedule. Brands also care about the corridor: they will not approve a site that undercuts an existing branded location nearby.
Approval is not automatic and it takes time. If you are buying an existing branded station, ask the seller early who handles approvals and what the current process looks like, because the closing timeline depends on it.
Franchise route versus buying an existing station
Starting fresh with a franchise means site selection, permitting, construction, and tank installation in Florida, which is a long and capital-intensive path. Buying an existing branded station gives you existing volume, customers, and permits, with the trade-off of inheriting equipment condition and contract terms.
Most buyers we work with find acquiring an existing site faster and more predictable. We can also model what the assumed brand relationship costs through our fuel supply agreement advisory before you commit.
